A new book on solving cryptic crosswords by understanding how they are compiled, complete with 80 cryptic puzzles. For everyone who has been baffled, bemused and bewildered by those seemingly incomprehensible clues to cryptic crosswords, Jack Dunwoody has put together both a reference book detailing how a compiler thinks and a collection of 80 of his crosswords from the FinWeek series, selected from when he first started compiling for the magazine in June 2003.
This book will give an introduction into these basics for the new cryptic solver, as well as an insight into the different techniques used in compilation for the experienced solver. To this end, the first section of the book, THE TECHNIQUES, covers twelves approaches used by compilers, with plenty of examples from each. Although compiled for South Africa’s leading financial magazine, THE PUZZLES section contains 80 cryptic crosswords puzzles of a general knowledge nature. Readers will encounter some 1800 clues on which to apply their new-found insight into how a cryptic crossword compiler’s mind works.
