The updated, extended, explanatory and bilingual Dictionary for Health Sciences is based on the Woordeboek van Afrikaanse Geneeskundeterme, which was published in January 1979 and which had seen eight reprints. The sudden increase in knowledge over the past three decades necessitated this revision.
A number of the fundamental sciences such as Medical Physiology, Genetics and Pharmacology were almost unrecognisably modernised, whilst others were almost entirely transformed. The Clinical Sciences in Medical Science and Dentistry assigned technology to everyday practice, whilst modern diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitatory approaches redefined the scene dramatically.
The principles of the medical-ethics underwent extensive nuances, whilst biostatistical and epidemiological considerations found common application in the medical practice and research. Psychiatry terminology was internationally refined.
The English-Afrikaans Part II does not merely reflect two wordlists. To enhance user-friendliness thousands of comprehensible Afrikaans synonyms or nouns, and even short phrases were added.
This second edition tries to update and expand a valuable scientific and cultural treasure. The new edition contains about 10 000 more entries than the previous edition and approximately 8 000 terms are redefined. This source is not only invaluable to under- and postgraduate students and practitioners in all disciplines of the health sciences, but also to translators, language practitioners and journalists, to both Afrikaans and English speakers.
