Trained as a secondary school teacher in the 1970s, John has been active in the publishing industry for almost 30 years, as editor, proofreader, technical writer and industrial editor. In October 2000 he ran his first course in copy editing and proofreading; John has subsequently presented courses in various forms both publicly and privately.
The use of English, particularly South African English – whether as writer, speaker or editor – remains his abiding passion, however. And to help wordsmiths improve their language use he devised a grammar course that has proven very popular. Through his training courses he has come face to face with the problems people experience daily with South African English, many of them arising from the influences of the other ten official languages on people’s understanding and use of English in South Africa.
